Art and Design Technology

Art

Brede primary School has designed an Art scheme of work to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Our scheme is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their idea and thought about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history.

The scheme is designed with five strands that run throughout:

  • Generating idea
  • Using sketchbooks
  • Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating and analyzing

Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Units in each year group are organized into four core areas:

  • Drawing
  • Painting and mixed media
  • Sculpture
  • Craft and design

Lessons are practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to document ideas.

Design and Technology

At Brede Primary School we use the Kapow Primary Design and Technology Scheme of Work. The curriculum is based around four key themes:

· Design

· Make

· Evaluate

· Technical Knowledge

These key themes run through the six key areas of the scheme of work:

· Cooking and nutrition

· Mechanisms/Mechanical systems

· Electrical systems

· Digital world

· Structures

· Textiles

We use a spiral curriculum, where these six areas are revisited again and again with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revisit and build on their previous learning. Electrical systems and Digital world begin in KS2. Through the scheme, pupils respond to design briefs and scenarios that require consideration of the needs of others, developing their skills in these six key themes. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work.
