Modern Foreign Languages

At Brede Primary School, we follow the Planit French curriculum by Twinkl, which offers a carefully structured sequence of lessons designed to ensure progressive development in line with the National Curriculum for languages. The programme is built around engaging themes such as Time Travelling, Let’s Visit a French Town, and This Is France, providing pupils with a meaningful introduction to the cultures and communities of French-speaking countries.

This linear curriculum allows children to build their skills gradually over time, fostering curiosity and deepening their understanding of the wider world. Planit French supports pupils in expressing their ideas and thoughts in French, while creating regular opportunities for interaction through both spoken and written communication. A key focus of the scheme is exposure to authentic French, with frequent listening activities featuring native speakers.

In Lower Key Stage 2, the emphasis is on developing a strong foundation in Speaking and Listening. These skills are further embedded and extended in Upper Key Stage 2, alongside increased focus on reading and writing. Pupils are gradually introduced to more complex language structures and encouraged to develop greater independence as language learners.

Through the Planit French scheme, we aim to inspire a lasting enthusiasm for languages, broaden pupils’ cultural awareness, and nurture confident, reflective learners. Our goal is to provide every child with a solid foundation for future language study and a lifelong appreciation for global communication.
